SUMMARY:ANNUAL GALA - LET SILENCE SHINE
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, MILAWA celebrates and supports humanitarian causes in Africa. MILAWA’s accomplishments include a contribution of about $5\,000 that helped combat the Ebola Pandemic in Liberia and Sierra-Leone in 2015. In 2016\, MILAWA contributed a two-year supply of sanitary hygiene products worth $3\,800 to eight primary and secondary schools in Bomet and Kericho Counties in Kenya. In 2017\, MILAWA contributed $5\,200 to Manyoni Orphanage Center in Manyoni\, Tanzania. In 2018\, MILAWA donated $7\,044 to the Julia Lule Foundation to support the college education of Deaf students in Uganda. The projects\, events\, and galleries documented on our website attest to MILAWA’s continued support of enriching lives and growing communities. \nThe 2019 MILAWA Gift to Africa theme is “LET SILENCE SPEAK” launching the Abraham Assana Foundation in honor of the late Abraham Assana who was a strong MILAWA supporter. \nOn June 30\, 2012\, a gunman cut Abraham’s life short. On one hand\, we have globalization\, technological and digital revolution and the opportunities they bring\, and on the other hand\, the growing informality of labor\, unstable livelihoods and incomes\, new fiscal and trade policies and environmental impacts—all of which must be addressed in the context of women’s economic empowerment. \nIn 2015\, world leaders adopted the Sustainable Development Goals\, placing gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Achievement of the goals\, including ending poverty\, promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth\, reducing inequalities within and between countries\, and achieving gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls\, rests upon unlocking the full potential of women in the world of work. \nAdditionally\, policies must count for the women in the informal economy\, promote women’s access to innovative technologies and practices\, decent work and protect women from violence in the work place. \nThe 5th annual IWD\, Sunday\, March 5\, at the Hyatt Regency Center will feature guest speakers sharing their success stories\, dance and music presented by local cultural groups\, and networking over refreshments.
