EMPOWER HER PERIODS – SUPPORTING GIRLS TO STAY IN SCHOOLS – Bomet & Kericho Counties

In 2016, Misawa’s project of the year was “Empower Her Periods.” The organization worked with Impact Africa, a local manufacturer of sanitary pads based in Kitale, Kenya to provide pads to eight Schools. The organization provided 825 kits of pads worth USD 3,300 with Impact African, making a local contribution of kits worth USD 500.

MILAWA, through Dr. Alice Kones who is a member of the organization, donated the 825 kits of reusable sanitary pads to the girls in Kenya’s Rift Valley region of Bomet and Kericho Counties. One kit contains two reusable pads and an undergarment that lasts for a year. The distribution activities were implemented by Queen Sara Foundation, a community-based organization championing the rights of the girl child and conducting training towards reproductive health rights in a bid to increase girl retention in schools and to reduce cases or early marriages and pregnancies. The beneficiaries included girls of the following schools:

  1. Kakirimai Primary School – 150 kits
  2. Kipkoligo Primary School – 85
  3. Chemaner Primary School – 120
  4. Sigowet Primary School – 101
